The ancient art of Jacquard Weave is alive and growing, thanks in part to RA Smart, where we are committed to the promotion and development of this wonderful method of manufacturing.

Here in Macclesfield, the home of silk production in the UK, we have 4 modern high speed dedicated looms capable of producing the most intricate of designs. Our Weave facility was extended as recently as 2006, when the new production floor was opened by Sir Nicholas Winterton DL MP and Councillor Norman Edwards.

Weaving silk for men’s ties sees as much as 80% of our work exported to markets such as Japan and the US, representing a major success for British manufacturing and once again placing the town of Macclesfield firmly on the world map of silk production. Macclesfield’s long history of silk production dates back to 1261 AD when King Edward I granted the borough a Royal Charter.

The Weave side of our business is growing year on year and it’s not just silk for men’s ties being produced, we are also increasingly weaving for men’s scarves and working with leading designers on creating silk soft furnishing ranges.

Macclesfield, Cheshire – the home of the English silk industry

Macclesfield is as inextricably linked to silk printing and weaving as Northamptonshire is to shoe making and Staffordshire is to potteries...

Back in 1261 King Edward I granted the borough a Royal Charter and the very earliest products from the town were silk thread and silk-covered buttons produced by local ‘home-workers’. But in 1755, the first silk mill was established; a seminal moment that forever changed the production of silk in Macclesfield. A growing number of mills in the area were soon producing an increasingly diverse range of silk clothing and accessories including printed and woven silk ties, handkerchiefs and scarves.

Although many of those early mills are now gone, the town’s reputation in silk still shines as brightly as ever. Macclesfield remains globally renowned for the production of high-quality printed and woven silk ties. The association with the town still attracts legions of discerning customers who value silk that is unsurpassed in quality and steeped in history.

R A Smart's continued investment in state of the art technology allows the company to deliver traditionally manufactured silk ties, accessories and fabric of the highest quality, steeped in heritage, yet with a contemporary understanding.
